Facing Disappointment
I was deeply encouraged by all that I witnessed God doing in our church and worship services throughout January. We launched an inspiring year-long series entitled Threads of Redemption, and it has been profoundly uplifting to discover God’s desire to redeem humanity throughout scripture. So far, we have explored the books of Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, and Numbers, uncovering God’s promises to establish His people, bring deliverance, institute a covenant, and extend grace and mercy even in the face of rebellion.
Lately, I’ve been reflecting on the progression of rebellion and how it can take us from disappointment to discouragement and, ultimately, to defeat. If we’re not vigilant, we can allow disappointments to lead us into a cycle of complaining and turning away from God—eventually leaving us feeling trapped and defeated.
This is a struggle we face daily, often beginning with something as simple as disappointment. However, there are practical steps we can take to break free from this downward progression:
Lately, I’ve been reflecting on the progression of rebellion and how it can take us from disappointment to discouragement and, ultimately, to defeat. If we’re not vigilant, we can allow disappointments to lead us into a cycle of complaining and turning away from God—eventually leaving us feeling trapped and defeated.
This is a struggle we face daily, often beginning with something as simple as disappointment. However, there are practical steps we can take to break free from this downward progression:
- When I feel disappointed, I remind myself that God has never let me down. Even when the disappointment feels justified, I choose to trust that God is working behind the scenes for my good.
- When I feel discouraged, I call on the God who keeps His promises and reminds me that all things work together for good for those who love Him (Romans 8:28).
- When I feel defeated, I turn my focus to the empty cross and the empty tomb. These symbols of victory remind me that Jesus has overcome sin, death, and the grave. This truth empowers me to walk confidently in the victory He has given me.
